How to tell if a repair is still worth it
A common rule of thumb: multiply the age of your system in years by the estimated cost of the repair in dollars. If that number lands under , a repair is usually the better bet. Past — and especially on a system already past 12–15 years old — the math tips toward replacement, since a large repair on old equipment is often just a deposit toward the next failure.
The exception is anything involving a cracked heat exchanger or a failed compressor. Both are effectively the heart of the system, and a repair estimate for either one is usually close enough to a new system’s cost that it deserves a side-by-side comparison before committing.
